The Mystic Interiors Series

Return to the Mystic Interiors Series Gallery

Although my MYSTIC INTERIORS series does not offhand seem to be concerned with the human condition, it is. Its underlying motif is the precarious nature of Man's existence. The series, which consists of over half a dozen oil paintings on architectural subjects, was done in the mid-1960s and is one of my earliest ones. In each work, a bright light glows – whether in a tunnel or in a window or in a doorway – and is set against the dark architectural surroundings. The source of the glowing light is mysterious. The light itself is not easily characterized as signifying good or evil; it can be as easily interpreted as being benign as it can be viewed as menacing. Each of the paintings thus poses the question whether there is hope for the world or whether what awaits mankind is gloom and doom.
